February 3, 2025 – Community Farm Winter Care Team

Dear Fellow Farm members and friends,

King Winter and the Snow Queen have arrived!  The winter care team is dedicated!

I asked them to send me selfies so I can introduce you to them.

Pete,  seen here with Fern, Jahnavi and Luna inside the bale feeder. Pete learned how to use the tractor to move a round bale once a week into the feeder. Every day one of the animal care team comes to feed, water, and muck the stalls. Mucking can be a meditative practice, as Pete has noted. Thank you!

Caitlin, seen here with Mary, came today to care for the animals. Caitlin also helps care for the bees on the farm. Come June, we might see her with her mother, Eileen the beekeeper, catching swarms. During pick-up days, you might have seen her beautiful bouquets for sale on the distribution table. Thank you, Caitlin,  for your gentle care of the animals

Nigel, seen here with Fern waiting for her kale treats, comes on wednesdays. He has learned to wrestle with the tractor in this cold weather he will move round bales as needed, in addition to mucking and watering and feeding kale treats. Nigel has been a regular presence on the farm, harvesting, composting and mulching the fields. Thank you Nigel!

Kari comes very early on sunday mornings. She learned to love cows while working at the farm that our cows come from, which specializes in the Guernsey heritage breed. Before that, she worked here with Annie and Paul. She recently returned to the area and provided support last winter when Judah the bull calf was unexpectedly born. She has described herself as a ‘gopi’. Thank you Kari!  It’s good to have your help again.
